SUMMER 2000 NEWSLETTER
(Covering the Months of June through August)
So, this has been a longtime
coming, eh? Just when we'd all settled in to a comfortable pattern
of I-write-the-letters-and-you-visit-and-read-them, I suddenly switch
to I'm-too-busy-to-give-you-a-monthly-note.
However, all that has changed, and we're back to
normal now. The last newsletter was handwritten, you'll recall,
because the laptop was stolen in the Great German Computer Caper.
Not to fear, however, because due to the generosity of the band,
I have a new computer and will now write my regular monthly notes
to you. However, yesterday, the digital camera suffered the Bizarre
Battery Blowup, and has ceased functioning. (Next month's newsletter
might be a little heavy on the textual/descriptive side.)

Where I keep my compliments

But enough of my electronic
foibles, we've got summer to cover. First of all, we've had
three new members of the LOST AND FOUND team this summer. Nate
joined us on the road. In the LAFOffice in Minneapolis (The
Metroplex), Annie joined us
for the summer and concentrated on trying to get our music into
retail outlets. Troy has signed up
for the long haul, and will be busy calling you to remind you
of concerts in your neighborhood. |

Now that we've all been introduced,
let's take a journey back through time to a little month that
shares the name of Ward Cleaver's spouse. Following the wedding,
we started the huge tour by playing an outdoor gig in Lansing,
Michigan. Great parking-lot fun, as you can imagine. Then
it was off to Zanesville, Ohio, where we noticed a tire going
flat. The host offered to change the tire, but discovered
that our spare tire had been stolen in the Stealthy-Thieving,
Spare-Tire, Sort-of-Tragedy. However, through a series of
phone calls, the locals were able to get things in a drivable
condition, and we motored away post-concert for a late-night
arrival at the Alive Festival in Canal Fulton, Ohio. The Alive
Festival is always great fun. This year we were the MC's (yo),
and had the opportunity to introduce the W's. (Pay attention,
that's a theme.)Since we were on the stage a lot, we even
got our very own power supply.

Just casting away....

What else? Oh yes, we ate
with our friend Andrew Peterson--whose new album is excellent!
Also, my family came along for a visit, and Lily took the
opportunity to engage in one of her favorite past-times: stone
throwing.

We left Ohio, after a fine
festival, and Nate drove us to the Detroit airport. (Writer's
Note to Reader: This is the part of the summer where the events
become too large to get any actual photographs of, so please
excuse the lack of photos in the Photo Phrenzy. And please
excuse my ending that first clause with a preposition.) Michael
and I flew to Los Angeles to participate in the LA portion
of an event called DC/LA. Had a fine time, including a rare
visit or two to Michael's house. From there, it was off to
St. Louis, Missouri, where we played the first of two gatherings
hosted by the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Awesome
event = awesome time. Michael took a brief break to show his
Superhero side. Also in St Louis, Michael
borrowed a fellow's hat in order to avoid becoming dehydrated.
Some folks from New Jersey asked us to try on some masks.
One fellow was doing a little LOST AND FOUND promotion with
his unusual hat.

In between the two Lutheran
weeks, we zipped over to Lafayette, Indiana, to provide a
little music for the Evangelical Free Church youts. As was
the case two years ago, we had a most awesome time (= awesome
event, for us anyway). On the first night, they set us up
on the stage surrounded by the pyro that would be ignited
during the worship band's set. Let me just say, whoa. Here
I go, "whoa." Thanks for letting me say whoa. On our Nation's
birthday, one young lady decided to honor her native land
with a little painted face. Also, in Indiana, some young ladies
went all out in their seamstress skills and paid a little
tribute to our "Lions" song.

|
After Indiana, it was back
to St Louis, for the second week of the Lutheran gatherings.
Another great week, but I had this strange sense of déja
vu through it all. Turns out, of course, we actually HAD been
there before. Following that week of Groundhog's Day, we took
a couple of days off and went home. We re-grouped in Oshkosh,
Wisconsin (where they make the kids' clothes) and played the
role of MC's (yo) at the Lifest Festival, which our friend
Bob Lenz dreamed up. (Some events are Lifey, some are Lifer,
but Bob's festival is the Lifest!) While in Oshkosh, we encountered
our first and only stalker. He wasn't exactly very stealthy,
though, so he was easy to spot. (I think we were his first
stalkees.)

A family visit

From there, we flew to Washington,
DC, for the DC portion of an event called DC/LA. A great time
once more, with the added bonus that my family came along to
visit. Eleanor got to watch one of her favorite bands, the Supertones,
and I got a great photo of her from behind the stage. We had
the opportunity to visit many monuments around our Nation's
capital, and marvel at the marble. |
|
Then we traveled on to Knoxville,
Tennessee, where we played an event called CHIC, which is
a large gathering of young people from the Covenant Church.
Wow. This event rocks! We had such a great time. Though we
were really busy in Knoxville, Michael found some time to
do a little Pee Wee Herman impersonation.
